The Hockey Stick Debunked Again

Global warming hysteria is built in part upon a foundation of flawed data, and the infamous "hockey stick graph" debunked in Not Evil Just Wrong is one example of it. Now there is new proof that exposes the tendency of radical environmentalists to manipulate data.

Data experts Stephen McIntyre, who writes at the blog Climate Audit, and Ross McKitrick recount in the documentary how they snapped the hockey stick. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change used the graph to show a dramatic spike in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution, but McIntyre and McKitrick found both minor and major discrepancies in the underlying data and couldn't reproduce the graph without those errors.

McIntyre explained in Not Evil Just Wrong how the graph relied upon cherry-picked climate data. "You couldn't ascribe any statistical significance to that result," he said. The IPCC eventually realized the hockey stick graph "was a hot potato, so it dropped it," added Massachusetts Institute of Technology physicist Richard Lindzen.

hockeystick-debunkedYesterday, McIntyre released data that reveals an even more egregious case of selective data use to prove that humans are causing the globe to warm. The data this time involves the science of tree rings, and McIntyre said his chart that refutes the manipulated data is "one of the most disquieting images ever presented at Climate Audit."

McIntyre's analysis critiques global warming conclusions that were reached based on tree rings dating back to the 11th century, in the heart of the Medieval Warm Period.

The researchers who first publicized the data in 1995 and subsequent years said trees tell the story of a globe whose temperature spiked dramatically in the 20th century. They produced another hockey stick graph to buttress their argument.

The numbers were suspect from the get-go because they were based on only three problematic tree-ring cores from one location, the Polar Urals. McKitrick noted yesterday that sound research requires at least 10 trees in a sample. Data from additional trees in the same region cast further doubt on the research.

But that didn't deter the pro-global warming "scientists." They ignored the tree cores that might refute their thesis, and in subsequent journal articles, they added data from tree samples in areas far removed from the initial set.

The researchers repeatedly rejected McIntyre's requests to see their underlying data so he could test the hypothesis, but last year, they published it in a journal with strict rules for sharing those numbers. When McIntyre got them, he found proof that the researchers had manipulated their data just like the professor responsible for the previous hockey stick graph.

His data comparison "illustrates the most extreme example of scientific cherry-picking ever seen," concluded the team at the blog Watts Up With That.

Upon merging all of the data, McIntyre showed that the Medieval Warm Period, which is also discussed in Not Evil Just Wrong, was warmer than the present. And that occurred thousands of years before men started driving sport-utility vehicles or traveling in jumbo jets.

Once again, the facts have refuted global warming hysteria. Radical environmentalists who love to hate fossil fuels have stretched the truth so many times that it's a wonder anyone believes them. Even more of them will reject the propaganda after Not Evil Just Wrong premieres Oct. 18.

ThousandS?
The Medieval Warming Period was NOT thousands of years ago, was it? 800AD-1300AD... started just over a millennia ago and ended 700 years ago.

Otherwise, great piece.

As a matter of truth-in-labeling and of "Knowing the Enemy," please take time to word-search the recommended new "BRANCH CARBONIAN CULT" name for this pseudo-religious AGW scam -- whose self-evident cultic characteristics include

1. Leadership by a self-glorifying, manipulative New Age Prophet -- in this case, former Vice-President Al Gore, though he is rapidly being supplanted by President Barack Obama.

2. Assertion of an apocalyptic threat to all mankind.

3. An absolutist definition of both the threat and the proposed solution(s).

4. Promise of a salvation from this pending apocalypse.

5. Devotion to an inspired text which (arguendo) embodies all the answers -- in this case, Prophet Gore's pseudo-scientific book "Earth in the Balance" and his more recent "An Inconvenient Truth" documentary.

6. A specific list of "truths" (see the Ten Commandments listed below) which must be embraced and proselytized by all Cult members.

7. An absolute intolerance of any deviation from any of these truths by any Cult member.

8. A strident intolerance of any outside criticism of the Cult's definition of the problem or of its proposed solutions.

9. A "Heaven-on-Earth" vision of the results of the mission's success and/or a "Hell-on-Earth" result if the cultic mission should fail.

10. An inordinate fear (and an outright rejection of the possibility) of being proven wrong in either the apocalyptic vision or the proposed salvation

Since every such Prophet-led, scare-mongering, pseudo-religious conspiracy needs a properly descriptive name, and since this one's primary concerns over alleged depletion of the so-called "ozone layer" over Antarctica have shifted to a panic over CO2, instead, a fitting name for this cultic gaggle might be the "Branch Carbonian Cult" --

o "Branch" because it is a radical offshoot from the main body of science-based environmentalism;

o "Carbonian" because of its professed fear of carbon dioxide as a primary cause of AGW; and

o "Cult" because of its self-evident structure and practices -- which are in full accord with most elements of the typical religious cult, Branch Davidian or Jim Jonesian or otherwise.

Naturally, anything you can do to use this new label or post the AmericanThinker.com article which explains its validity -- http://www.americanthinker.com/jim_guirard/ -- will keep the ball rolling to make this condemnatory label a permanent part of the political and environmental affairs lexiclon.

Since the US National Academy of Science (NAS) found that the hockey stick was basically accurate as did 6-8 other studies then this whole website is a lie. Why didn't you mention the NAS fiding? The truth too hard to handle. Also, why didn't you mention that the Brisitsh judge allowed Al Gore's film to be viewed even with the nine MINOR errors? Again, truth too much for you?
