This is how they can report - with a straight face that:"The debate over [Global] warming dominated the opening of the summit meeting, but the Group of 8 nations also tackled the global economic recession, Middle East peace, the war in Afghanistan and development in Africa."
Would it be impudent to suggest that measures to "tackle Global Warming" such as increasing energy prices and stopping countries from industrialising might have some relevance to "the global economic recession...and development in Africa."
But not in the New York Times which has yet to acknowledge that "tackling Global Warming" will exacerbate the recession and destroy any hope of development in Africa.
