A recent report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) proves that climate variability has no impact on African civil wars. Instead the study says that it is traditional factors, like poverty and social tensions, that cause outbreaks of violence.
"Climate variability in Africa does not seem to have a significant impact on the risk of civil war," said author Halvard Buhaug, senior researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo's (Prio) Centre for the Study of Civil War.
Dr. Buhaung has said that while some of the climate measures have helped, they do not serve as a replacement for traditional "peace-building strategies."
Several questions remained unanswered in the article. For instance how much foregin aid was directed towards rebuilding forests and planting seeds? What Africa really needs are jobs, which will only happen with a free economic climate. Hong Kong is essentially a city on a slab of rock but their economic prosperity is unparalleled around the world.
It is no secret that food in the belly, private property, and access to health care will drive a nation forward. It is time to stop creating terms like "climate refugees" or driving foregin aid to solar panel hospitals, bed nets, and a mountain of other "green soluations." The best thing we could give Africa is our business.
