Earthquakes didn't kill Haitians - Underdevelopment did

Haiti earthquakeIt is only a matter of time before Environmentalists and some scientists blame the Haiti earthquake and its massive death toll on Global Warming. They have already laid the groundwork with this Sept 2009 article in the UK Guardian newspaper. According to Professor Bill McGuire, director of the Benfield Hazard Research Center, at University College London an upcoming scientific conference would show how "global warming threatens the planet in a new and unexpected way – by triggering earthquakes, tsunamis, avalanches and volcanic eruptions." Despite these claims the earthquake in Haiti was not caused by Global Warming.

And the death and destruction was not because Haitians had made a pact with the devil.

The reason so many people died in Haiti is because its people live in poorly built houses and have not benefited from development which brings with it cities and houses which can withstand earthquakes.

But guess who are the most active opponents of cities and modern concrete housing?

The environmental movement, sees cities and growing urbanization as "unsustainable" and something that must be stopped. Mark Fenn, the head of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Madagascar, believes development, in the form of jobs and prosperity, will be a negative for some of the world's most impoverished people. These environmentalists view development as an evil - destroying indigenous cultures. As the millionaire Hollywood actor Ed Begley Jr. says they may be poor, but they seem happy and development might threaten this happiness.
For Begley rampant child mortality and horrible deaths in inadequate houses during earthquakes are small prices for others to pay as long we can visit them on eco-holidays.

Environmentalists call this sustainable development but the only thing sustained is poverty. In the face of this massive earthquake it has meant visiting death and destruction on some of the poorest people on the planet. Shame on environmentalists, and shame on Ed Begley Jr.

If these enviromentalists have their own way, there would be technology at all. You only have to look at plans to build new homes or Airports etc, and they come out of the woodwork. The idea surely, is to maintain a balance. Looking after the enviroment is fine but not at the expense of the worlds poor.

Deb: "This is beyond ridiculous. [...] Environmentalists, specifically Ed Begley, Jr., are not anti-Development for Third-World countries."

I agree one shall be right, otherwise one deserve critics. But environmentalists are against development in poor contries. Our Swedish government, who call themselves environmentalists, tries to stop development countriees from using fossil fuel because they say it's not environmently friendly. The COP15 wanted expensive but weak electric solar power in poor countries instead of an abundance of cheap power.

Watch this:
So you're wrong about environmentalists.

Have you seen what Ed says in the movie? According to what Phelim (the producer) says, Ed says what you say he's not saying. But we all know you can be wrong if you havn't seen the movie or listened to everything Ed has said, and also it's not hard to belive lies on publicly documentet material in a film -- is it?

When you argue things, make sure you're somehow right.

Pat Robertson says Haiti "Swore a pact with the Devil". Yeah, a Devil named Karl Marx. Haitians live in filthy squalor on less than $2 a day with much of that being foreign aid because as a culture they reject Freedom, Reason and Individual Rights, aka: Capitalism. The Devil? No, they have no one but themselves to blame for rejecting Western Civilization.

That's...exactly what they're against. They're on record as being against it. There is a link RIGHT THERE on which you can WATCH them saying they're against it. I am really unclear on what you think you're basing your argument on.

"No, they have no one but themselves to blame for rejecting Western Civilization. "

Because a) your average Haitian, currently minus several family members and probably screaming in pain, absolutely had a say in the direction being taken by the political elite in their country and b) Western civilisation is an unproblematicly awesome system that has never caused any problems for any of the less-developed countries it's come into contact with, such as for example HAITI, which was a French colony.

You're just Pat Robertson by a different name, saying people deserve to suffer and die because they don't agree with your belief system. No one deserves what's happening in Haiti right now. Shame on you.

All the hype about global warming. I got a news flash for everyone. Earthquakes have been around for thousands and thousands of years. And people keep rebuilding an rebuilding the same poorly built structures in the same earthquake ravaged areas. Lets help them rebuild but not the same style, California changed and started building earthquake resistant structures, so can the people of Haiti with proper guidance. Al Gore and Pat Robertson have millions upon millions of dollars they could create so much for these countries and yet they sit in front of cameras and preach but do nothing, there is an old phrase, actions speek louder than words. Get up of your behinds and do something!!!

not anti-Development ???
In California( not yet 3rd world) the left is against nukes, coal.oil, natural gas etc. They were pro-wind until they were built in Altamont Pass. Now 30%(?) have to be shut down at a time because birds fly into them. The watermelons(green outside/red inside) are in court to stop solar power in DEATH (appropriate) Valley because the tortoises don't like shade or some such rot. Yeah it is probably a coincidence that they all for a theoretical development it's just when you start to build they don't like it.

First, Ed Begley Jr. I've watched a few of his "realityless" show and unfortunately saw "Meet the Applegates" so taking him seriously just doesn't happen. The tragedy in Haiti is the human suffering which needs to be addressed immediately and then someone needs to explain that this is 2010, not 1710. They can choose to live in poverty, squalor , whatever they choose, but they should do it knowing that the choices they make are their own and not expecting handouts when they don't act wisely. I don't believe they need a Wal-mart on every corner but if you are going to build tall concrete structures at least know how.
