Today the Commonwealth Foundation releases a statement demanding that Penn State authorize an external and independent investigation into Michael Mann's involvement with the Climategate e-mails.
Mann's work, primarily the hockey stick graph, has been featured by the IPCC for years. The hockey stick graph has since been debunked by Stephen McIntyre and Ross McKitrick, who were featured in Not Evil Just Wrong.
The Climategate e-mails reveal how Mann ignored requests for the data he used to create the hockey stick graph, manipulated existing data and attempted to stack the deck in his favor in peer-review journals.
Due to this misconduct, the Commonwealth Foundation believes it is imperative for PSU to put aside its reputation and to agree to the external investigation. According to the report, "The U.S. and Pennsylvania economies and social structures stand to be significantly altered by climate legislation. Taxpayers have the right to know before such bills are enacted what role, if any, scientific misconduct played in the development of that legislation."
