In the past week several Australian PMs resigned from the Liberal Party in protest of ETS. Unfazed Malcolm Turnball, the party's leader, vowed to continue forward with the climate change legislation.
As a result the Liberal Party revolted, and Turnball was voted out by 42-41, electing his opposition Tony Abbott as leader.
Less than 12 hours later, Abbott and the party promptly killed the climate change legislation.
With a final vote of 55-29 votes, the Liberals decided to vote the climate legislation down, if the numbers were not there for a Senate inquiry.
Australia's Prime Minister, who had planned to present ETS as a feather in his cap, now will be left empty handed at Copenhagen. If ETS had passed it would have added an additional $1,100 burden to Australian families annually, and increased the cost of groceries by 5 percent, according to the government study.
